As far as software, Digidesign's Pro Tools is one of (but not the only) the sequencer/editor programs that is used in every major studio.
Similar software to look into: Ableton Live, Cubase, Digital Performer, Logic Pro, Nuendo, & Sonar. They all do basically the same thing. The differences are based on your preferences between the interfaces & the hardware you use.
